Meet Melissa Fletcher

I started at Harvey Nichols 8 years ago within the 2nd floor Womenswear department. Over the 6 years I worked in Womenswear I was lucky enough to gain experience across Lingerie and Eveningwear also.

Tell us about your current role and your progression at Harvey Nichols?

I started at Harvey Nichols 8 years ago within the 2nd floor Womenswear department. Over the 6 years I worked in Womenswear I was lucky enough to gain experience across Lingerie and Eveningwear also.
In 2021 the business moved the Kidswear division from a concession model to own-bought which gave me the opportunity to buy for a sector I’ve always loved, after managing a Kidswear boutique before starting at Harvey Nichols. Last year I was fortunate enough to begin buying for the Sunglasses department also, which is a great contrast to Kidswear.

Let us know your ‘top tips’ for someone who wants to get into Fashion Buying?

I think there is a less of a focus now in gaining a Fashion Buying degree and more so on the work experience you’re able to find. I would encourage anyone trying to move into Fashion Buying to apply for fashion week internships and work experience schemes, across different areas of Luxury Fashion, not just Fashion Buying. Experience in wholesale or marketing can also give you a great insight into buying and the opportunity to build connections. Getting an entry role in Fashion Buying can be challenging as with a lot of industries, but its important to show your passion for the role and your long term goals towards the company you’re trying to join.

What projects are you currently working on & what are your 2024 trend predictions?

We have some great developments within the eyewear department, including the expansion of our menswear offer as well as opticals. We stock some of the best brands in the world, including Cartier, Chanel and Prada, however its an important part of our strategy to offer something for every Harvey Nichols customer, all year round. This season we’ve focused our introductions on brands that our customers love within the ready to wear departments such as Khaite and Jacquemus, as well as growing our ranges in brands that we know will continue to thrive in 2024 such as Miu Miu and Loewe. Another highlight for the coming year will be our Prada window takeover in June.

If you could travel anywhere, where would you go?

For the last few years I’ve wanted to go to Kenya on safari, but this year I’m hoping it’ll be possible, with some time added on the end to visit the island of Lamu.

Do you have a New Year’s Resolution this year that you’d like to share?

To get into the habit of actually using the gym membership I’ve been paying for since New Years last year!
