Maintenance Assistant - Birmingham

Luxury Department store Harvey Nichols is looking for a Maintenance Assistant to join our Facilities team in our Birmingham Store. This person is required to work 30 hours over 4 days a week and you’ll report into the Operations Manager and will ensure that both planned and unplanned maintenance work within the store is carried out in a safe and efficient manner.  We’re a luxury retailer with an amazing store to maintain so attention to detail is key to ensuring the customers journey in store is flawless.  To do this we try and push works out of trading hours where we can so require someone flexible to be able to work a variety of days including weekends, evenings or overnight if required for certain works/contractors.

About the role…

Reactive maintenance on a daily basis including carpentry, painting, plumbing, decorating and electrical work. Liaising with PPM Contractors and becoming an expert in all the store systems from Water Hygiene to Pluming and to RFID & Security Systems. Supporting our Events & Display teams in setting up for events in and out of store to ensure all setups are safe and compliant.

What you will be doing?

  • Dealing with regular PPM and ad hoc maintenance contractors as required to maintain the store standards.
  • Regular Fire, Health, and Safety checks around the store to ensure we work in a compliant and safe environment.
  • Responding to any maintenance issues as they occur in store, making safe and planning how to repair or replace to maintain the store aesthetic.
  • Regular Maintenance and compliance supporting the Legionella Risk Assessment
  • Liaising with Mailbox Management and Facilities teams where required.
  • Testing of Fire Alarm Systems and other Safety Systems
  • Following up with Pest Control visits and Actions
  • Ladder Checks and Compliance
  • Opening and Closing of the store as required
  • Risk Assessments and Audits as needed supporting the wider business requirements.

Skills and experience required…

  • You’ll already been an experienced Maintenance Assistant or an individual with experience across electrical, mechanical or maintenance who is looking for the next challenge.
  • You will be the type to take ownership, use your initiative and take responsibility for the safety and functionality of the store with the help and support of the Operations Manager. You’ll constantly be looking for ways to improve the store, the processes and the place while always focusing on the customer experience at heart.
